Description:

We’re seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working digital journalist to join our news team in the fast-paced, dynamic environment of NBC4 Southern California.

This is a full-time (40 hours a week) freelance position, available immediately. The position runs for a maximum of one calendar year and is located in the state-of-the-art Brokaw News Center at Universal Studios. The position is paid hourly and does not provide benefits. It is intended as a maximum one-year opportunity to gain valuable hands-on newsroom experience and work on innovative projects with a highly collaborative team.

After a one-month training, the shift will run 6 a.m.  - 2 p.m. Thursday - Monday, including Saturday and Sunday mornings. If this schedule does not appeal to you please do not apply.

This position includes working closely with both the broadcast assignment desk and the digital news team. You know you're a good fit if you posses great people sklls, excellent reporting, writing and editing skills, as well as a passion for multi-platform journalism. Experience with content management systems and social media as a reporting and engagement tool are important. 

A three-hour writing test is part of the application process.

Essential Responsibilities:

-Report and writing original web stories for the NBC4 Southern California digital platforms
-Report, write and edit content, and work closely with management, editorial staff and reporters
-Use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and other social media tools to report and to engage our audience
-Edit broadcast video for digital and for air
-Edit and enrich broadcast scripts for digital platform publication
-Monitor local news sites to ensure our site is competitive

Qualifications/Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

-Minimum 3 years of journalism experience
-User engagement via social media
-Proven ability to report, write, edit and produce content under heavy deadline pressure without compromising accuracy or credibility
-Highly developed news judgment
-Strong writing and editing skills
-Knowledge of AP style


Eligibility Requirements:

-Work in Universal City, CA
-Work a schedule that changes frequently and includes nights, overnights, weekends and holidays
-Submit to a background investigation
-Unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States

Desired:

-Basic understanding and demonstration of solid editorial judgment and journalistic ethics, including a current knowledge of laws of libel, slander and applicable FCC rules and regulations
-Video editing skills

-Experience in Los Angeles market and familiarity with Southern California audience and communities
-Good collaborative and interpersonal skills to communicate at all levels
-Understanding of emerging news production techniques and technology
-Works well in a team environment
