The Local News Editor for Waterloo-Cedar Falls oversees day-to-day news gathering at the Courier. This includes planning coverage; creating assignments for reporting, photography and video; editing content for print and online platforms; and other duties as directed by the North Iowa Editor. The Local News Editor will supervise the Waterloo-Cedar Falls staff when the North Iowa Editor is not in the market. The person in this position must take an active role in the Waterloo community. The Local News Editor may be assigned work pertaining to other North Iowa publications. This is the second highest-ranking editor among the two daily newspapers and two weekly publications in north Iowa. 


  1. Assist in carrying out all content strategies and newsroom policies and procedures in the Courier newsroom as directed by the North Iowa Editor and Lee Enterprises.
  2. Help maintain the regional news budget for the Courier (Waterloo-Cedar Falls), Globe Gazette (Mason City), Press News (Mitchell County) and Summit-Tribune (Forest City and Britt) with input from the North Iowa Editor. Contact appropriate reporters immediately with potential news of regional interest.
  3. Ensure that assignments are thoroughly completed and meet digital and print deadline expectations.
  4. Assist with implementing North Iowa publications’ plans to improve editorial content, provide regular enterprise reporting, and increase readership, page views and unique visitors.
  5. Report to the Heartland Regional Editor in the North Iowa Editor's absence and as directed.
  6. Serve as a member of the editorial board and write editorials as assigned.
  7. Serve as primary contact with the public regarding editorial department activities and responsibilities as directed by the North Iowa Editor.
  8. Represent the newspaper in the community and the industry as directed. This may include active participation in a local service club and planned interaction throughout the news coverage area.
  9. Adhere to established deadlines and ensure content meets standards of the newspaper, company and industry for accuracy, timeliness, thoroughness and balance.
  10. Attend staff meetings and participate in training activities.
  11. Perform other duties as may be required or assigned.

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and a minimum of three years related relevant experience in reporting, editing and managing staff; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
