The National Interest, a Washington-based magazine that focuses on international affairs, foreign policy, and politics, is searching for a news writer specializing in domestic politics with a focus on the 2020 election.

This is a full-time position.

This position would involve working remotely (East Coast timezone preferred) or in our Washington, D.C. office. However, our publication would require that all work be performed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday (EST).

We are looking for an individual who can write several short pieces per day about important domestic political issues and the 2020 election. Each article would be 400–650 words in length.

This position requires the following skills:

• At least one-year writing for a publication in some capacity. Ideal candidates would be able to demonstrate proficiency in writing multiple stories per day as assigned on a tight deadline while being mindful of SEO strategies.  A writing test will be administered.

• A keen interest and understanding of the following topics: U.S. national politics, 2020 U.S. presidential election, the Trump administration, key 2020 U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate races, political happenings on social media and television as well as breaking news coverage on top national security issues.

• Successful candidates must have the ability to write clearly, intelligently, and thoughtfully on short deadlines.

• A bachelor’s degree.

• The ability to cover breaking news at odd hours if needed. While this is rare, it does happen.

• Occasional copy editing of blogs and other pieces from time to time.

• Highly qualified candidates would show a track-record of utilizing sources and breaking news from time to time.

All applications must submit the following: cover letter, résumé/CV, four examples of your published work of at least five hundred words in length. Please email to  hkazianis@nationalinterest.org.
