Virginia Business, the only publication dedicated to covering economic activity in every region of the state, is seeking a special projects editor. This editor will oversee special publications and editorial projects, work on the regular monthly magazine, make content decisions and story assignments, edit copy, fact-check, write stories and perform other duties as assigned.

Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience with a proven track record of generating and assigning stories and successfully shepherding editorial projects and/or special sections.

Established in 1986, Virginia Business has won dozens of state and national journalism awards. It is located in downtown Richmond’s Shockoe Slip Historic District at 1207 E. Main St., #100. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the production of supplemental publications, including Hampton Roads Business; Virginia Business Site Locator; Virginia Meeting & Conference Planner; and Virginia Maritime Guide
  • Overseeing projects such as the annual Legal Elite section
  • Generating story ideas and making assignments for seven regional stories for print magazine each month
  • Writing and editing articles as needed for print and online, ranging from hard news pieces to feature stories to content aggregation for regional news briefs
  • Gathering, analyzing and editing data to prepare charts and other content
  • Compiling and distributing daily e-newsletters
  • Posting and updating content on VirginiaBusiness.com
  • Assisting with promotion of publication’s content on social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram
  • Recruiting and supervising interns


  • Solid editing, writing and reporting skills
  • AP Style knowledge
  • Project management
  • Self-starter with ability to generate regular story ideas
  • Strong fact-checker who pays attention to detail
  • Ability to create engaging content
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader and other commonly used applications
  • Basic HTML knowledge
  • Familiarity with posting content to WordPress and other content management platforms
  • Familiarity with Constant Contact and other email marketing platforms
  • Proficient with social media
