The Philadelphia Gay News, one of the oldest and most award-winning LGBT newspapers, is seeking a full-time staff writer for news and features assignments. Candidate should be comfortable writing stories that range from politics to crime to community events, and should understand the importance of community journalism. This is a deadline-driven position that requires strong writing skills, the ability to find and maintain sources, and the ability to work within a small staff of dedicated journalists. Journalism experience, either through internships or full-time work, is required. Local candidates who have a familiarity with LGBT issues and the local LGBT community is preferred.


  • Report and write news and feature stories for publication
  • Receive assignments and evaluation leads to develop story ideas
  • Independently arrange and conduct interviews with sources
  • Gather information about events through research, interviews, and tips
  • Attend political, news, sports, or cultural functions as part of story assignments
  • Review copy and correct errors in content, grammar, and punctuation


  • Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, or English (or proven experience in the journalism field)
  • Strong knowledge of proofreading, syntax, spelling, and format
  • Ability to collaborate with and draw information from others
  • Proficiency in MS Word; familiarity with InDesign helpful
  • Familiarity with AP style
