The Los Angeles Times is looking for an experienced editor to help lead our newsletters, which have become a vital platform for connecting our journalism with our audience.

The Times currently has more than 20 newsletters, including Essential California (written by Benjamin Oreskes), The Sports Report (written by Houston Mitchell) and The Gold Standard (written by Glenn Whipp).

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial journalist who is not only a sharp line editor, but also a digital strategist with a passion for understanding and serving readers and building loyal audience. If you join us, you will be part of the digital transformation of our newsroom and a reorientation of The Times around our most important mission: serving our readers.

You will also:

  • Help conceive new daily and weekly newsletters, as well as rebooting existing ones
  • Generate ideas, edit, write and assign writers and editors as needed
  • Run digital tests and collaborate with journalists to bring new ideas to life and continually improve upon existing products
  • Work with our newsletter product manager and UX designer and other parts of the reader experience
  • Assist in overseeing the scheduling, production and proofreading of newsletters
  • Track the newsletters’ performance and work with editors and writers to build audience and improve key performance indicators
  • Assist editors and writers in tracking and incorporating reader response and suggestions


  • Strong news judgment, line-editing skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working diplomatically across newsroom disciplines and an inclusive approach in the workplace
  • Deep working knowledge of online audiences, analytics and the best practices of editorial newsletter management
  • Familiarity with MailChimp or similar email service providers; basic HTML
  • Flexible hours (this could mean early-morning and/or late-night duties, weekend or holiday work, depending on demands)

This position is classified as Assistant Editor and is included in the Los Angeles Times Guild. Applicants should have at least five years of full-time journalism experience. The job is based at our office in El Segundo, Calif.
