If you’ve been chomping at the bit to use design, typography, color and information hierarchy to elevate a newsroom’s interactive visual storytelling, the Los Angeles Times has an opportunity for you.

The award-winning graphics and data visualization team at the Los Angeles Times needs to fill its No. 2 position. We’re seeking someone with design and managerial chops who wants to help our team grow through feedback and collaboration.

Our team is filled with experienced self-starters. We work hard to hit ambitious deadlines and strive to improve with each published piece. Our work ranges from serious to fun. We aim to offer our audience a delightful experience and a chance to learn something new.

In this role, you’ll be expected to:

  • Inspire and support the staff in creative approaches to interactive storytelling
  • Help set style and visual consistency of data visualizations, graphics and long-term projects
  • Display a competitive drive, collaborative spirit and a proactive approach to daily work
  • Help manage daily and long-term priorities by fielding incoming pitches
  • Set project meetings with newsroom partners to brainstorm ideas and critique the presentation of information in a thoughtful manner
  • Supervise members of the team and ensure performance is on-par with team and organizational goals and priorities

Among the minimum qualifications and experience, we’d like to see:

  • A portfolio that demonstrates a clear design sensibility for graphics and visualizations and an understanding of storytelling on multiple platforms, especially mobile
  • Deep understanding of design, typography, color and information hierarchy
  • Experience managing staff and daily production workflow in a fast-paced news operation
  • Fluency with Adobe Illustrator and other Creative Cloud applications
  • An ability to put HTML, CSS and JavaScript to use nearly every day in a deadline-driven newsroom
  • Expertise in a favorite tool or programming language for data and GIS analysis

This position is classified as Deputy Editor, Graphics and Data, and is based at our main office in El Segundo, Calif.
