The Los Angeles Times is looking for reporters to join our science and medicine team.

Reporters on our team cover a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) astronomy, paleontology, genetics, neuroscience, climate change and infectious diseases. Writers specialize in certain topic areas but should be able to jump in on any story. Each position involves a combination of news reporting and feature writing. At heart, all of our stories are about research – how discoveries are made, how truth is pursued, and where our knowledge comes from.

Applicants must be able to read a scientific journal article and translate it into plain English. They should not be intimidated by rocket scientists or brain surgeons, and they should be willing to follow researchers into remote wilderness areas, operating rooms and abandoned gold mines in pursuit of a compelling story.

A talent for bringing stories to life through the written word is required, and the ideal candidate will also work on videos, interactive graphics, podcasts and The Times’ new cable TV show. Applicants should have at least five years' experience. A track record covering science and medicine is preferred but not required.

These positions are included in the Los Angeles Times Guild and are based in El Segundo, Calif.

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume and samples of their work to Science & Medicine editor Karen Kaplan at
