PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:  Assist the daily/digital editor and production manager in newsroom planning and management; help edit copy and coach reporters with an emphasis on digital; oversee the daily print product and to serve as the editor in charge at night, with responsibility for content decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 1. Assist daily/digital editor and production manager

  • Help edit copy for online/print
  • Hold direct reports accountable for high performance via effective appraisals and recognition; assist in evaluating other writers not assigned as direct reports.
  • Ensure that direct reports get the training they need.
  • Serve as content coach for direct reports, helping push urgency for digital and building each reporter’s beat.

2. Work as night editor

  • Make content decisions in the absence of the daily/digital editor and production manager.
  • Edit copy that comes in after other editors leave.
  • Edit stories as necessary to fit in each edition.
  • Monitor the wire for late stories.
  • Post breaking news to the web as necessary and work with digital team on breaking news.
  • Leave overnight notes for any follow-ups needed the next day.
  • Assist in pagination, as needed.

3. Serve as part of the newsroom leadership team

  • Provide input, feedback, suggestions on newsroom projects, plans and issues.
  • Take part in personnel decisions to the degree appropriate for the situation.
  • Set standards and see that they are met.
  • Take part in newsroom management decisions where appropriate.
  • Individually communicate with and coach direct reports.
  • Ensure each direct report participates in the quarterly review system and maintains an annual performance and training plan.

4.  Help develop and achieve your individual performance plan based on the company’s strategic plan, annual plan and the news unit’s annual plan.

5.   Respond to other assignments or responsibilities at the direction of the Daily/Digital Editor and Production Manager.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Writing and reporting skills
  • Good news judgment
  • Digital-first mindset
  • Understanding of online metrics
  • Ability to edit for style, grammar and clarity
  • Ability to lead and coach news staffers
  • Knowledge of libel and other legal issues

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional experience
  • At least five years’ newspaper experience
