Description:

The Grants Pass Daily Courier, a family owned, independent newspaper in beautiful Southern Oregon, has an immediate opening for a general assignment reporter based in Jackson County, home to the cities of Medford and Ashland.

Our circulation is 10,000, we print five days a week, and we punch way above our weight.

You won't find yourself in a rut in this particular job. One day you might be covering a city council controversy, the next day you'll be writing about an artisan bakery.

The Daily Courier is not your typical newspaper being hollowed out by a corporate owner. The company has been owned by the same Grants Pass family since the William McKinley administration (that's 127 years and counting), no one was furloughed during the pandemic and no one’s pay was reduced.

No other media source — print, online or broadcast — comes close to covering our local market at the level we do, and our readers respond with loyalty to our newspaper. The Courier is always part of the conversation in Southern Oregon, a bulwark against agendas and bad attitudes, and we aim to keep it that way.

In 2021 and 2022, the Daily Courier won more Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association journalism awards than any other daily in the state. Daily Courier alumni have gone on to work at The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the San Antonio Express-News and CNN.

We are better positioned than most of our peers. Our company is debt-free and profitable, and we outsource nothing to other states or countries. Our pressroom shares a wall with the newsroom, so you'll hear the rumble once it starts up each day. We don’t use faraway design centers, no editing hubs, no remote printing sites. Humans on the first floor pick up the phone here when a customer service call comes in. It’s all done in-house. It’s all old-school.

In other words: If you're an excellent reporter who's fed up with the extreme cost-cutting and self-inflicted wounds at corporate chain newspapers, the Daily Courier is the place for you.

The company covers 100% of your health insurance premiums (no paycheck deductions). The pay for this position is $41,600 per year.

Outdoor recreation opportunities abound here in uncrowded settings, from whitewater on the Rogue River to remote backcountry trails in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Southern Oregon is known for vibrant downtowns, brewpubs, distilleries and Applegate Valley wineries, along with world-class theater in Ashland.

Applicants should have reporting experience, either collegiate or professional, and be well-versed in AP style. To apply, send a resume, a cover letter and links to your work to sstoddard@thedailycourier.com. Very important: Use “Reporter” as your email subject. Please email any questions you may have to the same address.

When applying, mention you saw this opening listed at JournalismJobs.com.
