Description:

Help manage local reporting with high impact in Alaska

The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska's most-read news source, is seeking an experienced full-time news editor to help us produce and manage coverage across multiple platforms, serving a local and regional audience that holds us to a high standard.

We have a focus on and commitment to audiences — serving them, listening to them, growing them, retaining them. We’re big enough to have a robust readership and wide, deep reach, but small enough to make decisions quickly and for individuals to have an immediate and significant impact. We have smart, demanding readers who know what good journalism looks like and hold us to a high standard, and the news editor we hope to hire would be joining a team of talented, experienced journalists who care about Alaska, the place and its people.

Our ideal candidate is someone with a proven record of producing journalism and managing coverage at a consistently high level. You're solid in the basics: You have excellent news judgment and a solid foundation in journalism ethics, exceptional editing and writing skills and meticulous attention to detail. You have a demonstrated ability to produce — and help co-workers produce — engaging, accurate, meaningful content in a rich and competitive news environment. You understand online news and bring curiosity and resourcefulness to your work.

Importantly, you're also an effective communicator and manager who cares about providing reporters the support they need to excel, including a shared sense of accountability. You thrive when working with multiple reporters as part of a highly collaborative team, and you also see the big picture in terms of how what each team member is doing connects to our newsroom's broader mission, and to readers.

This position would involve editing and managing two to three reporters covering a range of topics: breaking and spot news, the criminal justice system, homelessness, immigration and Indigenous issues. The role would also involve pitching in on reporting as needed, particularly on breaking news — up here, that could involve a wildfire, a destructive storm, a car accident, a plane crash, a public safety incident, a dangerous wildlife encounter or something else newsworthy that readers are seeing and discussing. While coordinating breaking news is a core part of this job, the stories you'd edit would have range, and include daily or two-day turns and news features.

We're looking for someone with at least four years' experience as a news reporter or editor, and at least two years' experience in day-to-day news editing. We're especially interested in hearing from candidates who have the following:

• A strong understanding of Alaska and important issues facing the state.

• Significant experience reporting or editing breaking news and enterprise stories, particularly coverage of public safety, criminal justice and homelessness.

• A demonstrated commitment to ethical and trauma-informed reporting practices, especially in coverage of issues related to criminal justice, immigration and vulnerable populations. We hope to hire a colleague who is reflective, principled and open-minded when it comes to reporting on sensitive topics and building trust with community members.

If you're interested in submitting an application but feel that you don't have the type of experience we've described here, or feel that you have important skills we haven't included, please don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

The Anchorage Daily News is independently owned and values an inclusive workforce reflecting a range of lived experiences, and we also value work-life balance and workplace flexibility. Our newsroom was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2020, 1989 and 1976.

We're located in a diverse, highly livable city of nearly 300,000 with Alaska and all its outdoor opportunities right out the door. We offer competitive pay and benefits, and we’ll relocate the right candidate. This position is based in Anchorage.
