Description:
Engagement Editor/Reporter
The Valley News is seeking an ambitious individual to play a vital editorial role in a family-owned, locally run news organization in the beautiful Upper Valley, an area known for its outdoor lifestyle, high-tech businesses, and leading academic institutions like Dartmouth College.
We are hiring an Engagement Editor/Reporter to serve as a bridge between our newsroom and the Upper Valley communities we cover. Reporting directly to the Managing Editor, you will help shape local coverage, edit copy, oversee opinion and reader contributions, engage audiences and produce lively, people-centered reporting of your own.
If you love local journalism, bring fresh ideas to the table every day, and want to be out in the community talking to readers, this role is for you.
About the Valley News
The Valley News is a digitally focused newsroom and six-day-a-week newspaper serving communities on both sides of the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and Vermont. We believe local news is essential to a community’s health, vitality, and sense of identity, and we back that belief with continued investment:
New digital tools and storytelling capabilities designed for modern audiences.
Growing channels to reach readers where they are, including daily newsletters, apps, and community engagement initiatives.
A supportive, family-owned parent company dedicated to sustaining independent local journalism.
What You’ll Do
Curate Community Voices & Opinion
Oversee and edit letters to the editor, guest columns, op-eds, and other community submissions.
Ensure a balanced, civil, and engaging platform for healthy public discourse across the Upper Valley.
Editing & Story Development
Help our team of newsroom leaders edit staff reporting and contributed copy for clarity, fairness, accuracy, and voice.
Collaborate closely with the managing editor, deputy editor and executive editor and reporters to sharpen angles, brainstorm coverage and elevate daily story packages.
Hands-On Community Reporting
Maintain an active reporting presence focused on the life of our towns:
Nonprofits & Civic Life: Highlighting the organizations, volunteers and initiatives shaping the region.
Community Life & Culture: Writing about local characters, gatherings, traditions and town happenings.
The "Fun Stuff": Spotlighting features, hidden gems and positive slice-of-life stories that make the Upper Valley unique.
Reader Engagement & Connection
Be present and visible in the community. You’ll be part of a team that attends events, meets residents and listens to community concerns.
Champion audience engagement efforts across digital channels, newsletters and reader callouts to invite public participation into our reporting.
Who You Are
A Passionate Journalist: You love journalism, care deeply about the mission of local news and believe in its power to strengthen communities.
An Idea Generator: You bring a steady stream of fresh, creative story ideas and new ways to engage readers.
Connected to the Community: You enjoy getting out from behind the desk, talking to people, and understanding what makes local towns tick.
Adaptable & Collaborative: Newsrooms change quickly; you thrive in a fast-paced environment, wear multiple hats with enthusiasm and maintain a positive, constructive attitude.
Curious About Technology: You understand that technology is changing faster than ever. We want someone who understands the importance of community trust built over generations, yet someone who is willing to experiment with new approaches that don’t undermine our credibility.
Sound Editorial Judgment: You have strong writing and line-editing skills, a sharp eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy and fairness.
What We Offer
A meaningful editorial seat with direct creative input at a respected, award-winning newsroom.
The backing of local, independent ownership committed to investing in good journalism.
A hybrid role combining editing, reporting and community connection.
Competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
High quality of life in the Upper Valley — home to Dartmouth College, the Connecticut River, world-class outdoor recreation, vibrant arts and strong community roots.
Our Philosophy
We believe the best local journalism:
Starts with people.
Earns trust through accuracy and accountability.
Reflects the full life of a community — not just its meetings and press releases.
Never stops evolving to meet readers where they are.
