Description:

Maryland Media seeks an experienced journalist to become a part-time adviser to The Diamondback, the university’s independent student newsroom. The adviser will guide and support the staff of the newsroom in all aspects of management and daily news coverage.

Maryland Media Inc. is a nonprofit organization that owns and publishes independent student media at the University of Maryland at College Park, including The Diamondback, Mitzpeh and The Black Explosion. The mission of Maryland Media is to empower and support students to run these campus publications free from the potential interference or censorship of the university. The goal is to provide students a learning experience that most closely resembles the roles in local and national media organizations. We encourage students to report, edit and produce journalism that reflects the diversity of the College Park community on campus and in the city.

Maryland Media is looking for an experienced journalist to become a part-time adviser to The Diamondback, the university’s independent student newsroom. The adviser will guide and support the staff of the newsroom in all aspects of management and daily news coverage. The expected time commitment will be four to five hours per week during the school year.

Responsibilities:

  • Build trusting relationships with the staff. Provide constructive feedback and empower the students. Ensure the newsroom is a “learning lab” for all students.
  • Counsel the editor-in-chief and senior staff members on management, how to structure a newsroom and how to best operate as an all-digital publication.
  • Encourage students to seek and celebrate a range of perspectives and lived experiences reflective of this University and surrounding community in coverage and in hiring practices in order to effectively report accurate, ethical and responsible journalism.
  • Work with students to help the staff report more stories on campus and in College Park, in varied formats, particularly in breaking news and original reporting.
  • Guide students to craft strategies and processes that build year-over-year, allowing future staff members to iterate on past successes and failures.
  • Mentor students on the fundamentals of editing, reporting and writing news.
  • Provide guidance regarding journalism ethics, corrections and other standards.
  • Update the Maryland Media Inc. board of directors with regular progress reports.
  • Hold regularly scheduled meetings with editors and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a professional journalist in a newsroom.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring young journalists or college students in some capacity.
  • Experience managing people in a newsroom, as an editor, products or in another relevant supervisory role.
  • Experience in restructuring, transitioning or reorganizing newsrooms, teams and/or editorial processes (beats, staff assignments, etc.) to digital-first functionality.
  • Experience with data visualization, alternative storytelling or audience engagement.

Compensation for this role will be an annual stipend of $7,000.

Interested candidates should upload a resume with relevant work experience and a cover letter explaining why they’re interested and how they’d approach the role. Email craig@marylandmedia.org with any questions. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but please apply by Nov. 15 for best consideration. We’d like to provide a transition between advisers, identifying The Diamondback’s new adviser in November 2026 for a start in January 2027. Your cover letter should be addressed to Craig Mummey, the general manager of Maryland Media, Inc., and the board of directors.
