Description:
The Augusta Press in Augusta, Ga., is a digital online daily that seeks a managing editor to oversee the day-to-day operation of the newspaper, supervise reporters, and report on county government and other stories as needed. This position reports to the executive editor. The person hired for this position must have a background in managing daily operations including staff assignments and editing for clarity, accuracy, AP style, legal concerns and ethics. The candidate should have at least five years’ experience as a managing editor, a degree in journalism, communications or a closely related field, and should be familiar with web analytics, SEO best practices, and publishing workflows. This person should also have exceptional leadership abilities and strong interpersonal communication skills. We are looking for someone with a strong news background who can lead our reporters to excel in their work.
The Augusta Press is in its sixth year of publication, and has consistently won awards for its reporting and photography. We are a small paper but capable of big things with the proper leadership.
Our staff (two fulltime reporters, one parttime reporter, and several freelancers) works remotely, but meets in person weekly. We are hyperlocal and primarily cover government, education, business and features.
For questions or to apply, please contact Debbie van Tuyll, executive editor, at dvantuyl@theaugustapress.com. If applying, please send a resume and letter of interest. The position will remain open until filled, but we are hoping to have someone in place by early December.
