The Timberjay has an immediate full-time opening for a creative and entrepreneurial journalist who is looking for advancement within a small, independent, financially-stable news organization.
We're not part of a chain and we have no corporate overlords pushing for cuts to the newsroom to pad profits. Rather, the Timberjay is focused on doing the hard work of community journalism, through its weekly print edition and its vibrant and heavily-trafficked website in addition to several specialty publications. We serve a broad geographic region tucked up along the Canadian border. As a community newspaper, we cover everything from high school sports and local events to city councils and school boards. But we go well beyond routine coverage to delve deep into broader issues affecting the communities we serve, including mining, wilderness management, and government and corporate abuses affecting the region. The Timberjay has developed a national reputation for investigative journalism and for the aggressive pursuit of access to public records. The ideal candidate is a motivated, self-starting reporter who understands how to cultivate sources and work a beat. The ideal candidate will also have both layout (InDesign) and photographic experience. The right candidate would have the opportunity for rapid advancement within the organization.
