Description:
Instructor, Communication
The Department
of Communication invites applications for the position of Instructor in
Communication, specializing in broadcast production and broadcast journalism.
This non-tenure track position carries a 4/4 teaching load and 9 months of
full-time service.
The program is
industry-focused and student-centered. We are looking for someone who has spent
significant time in the field telling stories across platforms (broadcast
newsrooms, multimedia production houses, digital news startups, or sports media
operations) and wants to bring that expertise into the classroom.
We balance
hands-on skills with an integrated approach to broadcast production in
journalism and other forms of content creation. Special consideration will be
given to those who can teach creative and experiential courses in broadcast
news and media production. The ideal candidate will maintain professional
currency and collaborate with program faculty to ensure alignment between
professional practice and academic foundations.
This position
requires the following qualifications:
- All applicants must have a master’s
degree in mass communication, journalism, media production or a related
field
- 3-5 years of industry experience in
broadcast journalism, journalism, multimedia production, media operations
and/or news production.
The department
will give priority to applicants who have:
- Evidence of quality prior teaching
at the undergraduate level.
- Philosophical commitment to
digital, technological, and disciplinary integration.
- Background to bridge our digital
journalism and digital media production curricula and help students
develop industry-ready skills.
The position
has an anticipated start date of August 1, 2027.
The Department
of Communication earned full accreditation from the Accrediting Council for
Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in April of 2023. We strive to
offer a high-impact, industry-current approach to teaching. Our approach helps
builds a strong reputation for producing job-ready graduates who are
well-rounded citizens. Courses are offered through various delivery formats
including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and 100% on-line. JSU also serves a
robust population of nontraditional and first-generation learners. Quality
teaching will be the successful candidate’s primary responsibility balanced
with creative production aligned with the position, as well as service to the
department supporting our student media and contributing to the ongoing
development and innovation in our curriculum.
