Description:

Local Government and Growth Reporter-Omaha, NE

The Omaha World-Herald, a Lee Enterprises publication, is looking for a self-starter who likes to dig into local government, growth and development. Like writing about trash and potholes? Motivated to find the truth behind misspent funds? Wondering about the impact of data centers on public power rates? Ever ask where recycled materials get used? We’re your kind of place.

This beat isn’t about sitting through gavel-to-gavel meetings to write a story. It’s about accountability, infrastructure and the pocketbook issues that shape life across the Omaha area. You will track how local officials spend taxpayer dollars, examine planning and zoning decisions and massive infrastructure projects. You'll follow paper trails to explain why decisions were made and how those decisions impact people in the community.

What You’ll Do: Break enterprise and watchdog stories. We'll have you use public records, campaign finance filings, contracts and municipal budgets to find waste, policy shifts, and systemic issues before other outlets notice them.

You'll also cover growth and infrastructure investments, report on the forces reshaping the region — from commercial development and residential expansion to data center energy demands, water resources, transit and public works. And we want our reporters to translate public policy for people. We hunt for stories that impact residents, neighborhoods and businesses. We also love someone who understands the value of short-form video in reaching our audiences where they are.
