Part-Time Sports Reporter Job Description
The Butler Eagle is seeking a digital-first part-time sports reporter to be a leading voice of high school, college and community sports coverage in Butler County.
This is an excellent opportunity in particular for a motivated, young sports journalist looking to build their career in a local, hands-on newsroom.
You are interested in this job if you value covering local sports, writing creative enterprise and feature stories that go beyond who won and lost and reporting on everything from recruiting to coaching changes. You are comfortable balancing longform storytelling with short news briefs and being on camera to talk about all of it. You will be encouraged to try new storytelling formats and go beyond the box score.
The ideal candidate is a talented multitasker who can work as part of a team, move quickly, explore new content strategies and build a network of sources and trust in high school communities.
This reporter will join an APSE and Keystone award-winning sports team that covers 11 high schools in three PIAA districts, a Division II PSAC college and a community college. We also produce under the Alter Eagle banner a weekly sports podcast, “Eye on Sports,” which this reporter will be a cohost of.
This part-time position is 29 hours a week and primarily in-office. Nights are required as well as reliable transportation, and weekends and holidays are expected on occasion and particularly during postseason coverage.
Responsibilities:
- Hit daily digital deadlines and write quickly and accurately
- Show strong news judgment to cover everything from breaking news to player profiles, watch lists to multipart series
- Build and maintain community sources
- Cohost “Eye on Sports” once a week and contribute to planning
- Record, produce and edit video, and take photos when needed
- Plan daily sports page layout for copy desk as needed
- Works evenings and weekends
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
- Experience or comfort working in written, visual and audio formats
Application instructions:
Please send the following to sports editor Jake Merda Adams at jadams@butlereagle.com:
- Resume – 1-2 pages
- Cover letter explaining how you’d approach this role
- 4-6 examples of your best work (video sample encouraged)
