Description:

Job Title: Digital Sports Reporter

Location: Upstate South Carolina - Field/Remote Hybrid

Reports To: Executive Editor

Employment Type: Full-Time or Freelance (Contract)

Position Overview:

Dunlap Media Group is seeking a versatile Digital Sports Reporter to lead sports coverage for sites in the Upstate of SC. This position is designed for a modern multimedia journalist who can tell compelling local sports stories across multiple platforms — through written stories, video, social media and on-camera reporting.

The ideal candidate is just as comfortable interviewing a coach and writing a game story as they are shooting photos from the sidelines, recording and editing a vertical video for social media or appearing on camera to deliver a game recap or sports update.

Responsibilities:

·       Report and write timely, accurate and engaging stories covering high school and community sports, including games, breaking news, features, athletes, coaches and other sports-related topics.

·       Shoot, edit and produce video content, including highlights, interviews, game recaps, features, behind-the-scenes content and short-form vertical video.

·       Appear on camera for interviews, game previews and recaps, social media videos, sports updates and other digital programming.

·       Conduct on-camera interviews with athletes, coaches and other newsmakers.

·       Create original social media content rather than simply reposting links to website stories.

·       Provide real-time social media coverage from games, press conferences, practices and other sporting events.

·       Develop original story and video ideas with strong digital and social media angles.

·       Take responsibility for daily sports content and maintain an active content calendar.

·       Build relationships with coaches, athletic directors, athletes, schools and other sources throughout the communities we cover.

·       Monitor social media, community conversations and analytics to identify emerging stories and content opportunities.

·       Write compelling headlines, captions and social media copy that encourage engagement while maintaining journalistic standards.

·       Participate in sports podcasts, livestreams and other Dunlap Media Group digital programming as needed.

·       Cover other news and community assignments when needed.

Qualifications:

·       2+ years of journalism, digital media, sports media or relevant content creation experience preferred.

·       Excellent reporting, writing, interviewing and storytelling skills.

·       Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit high-quality video.

·       Comfortable and engaging in front of the camera.

·       Strong understanding of social media content creation and distribution.

·       Experience creating vertical and short-form video content for social media.

·       Working knowledge of photo and video editing software and mobile content-production tools.

·       Ability to work independently in the field and produce written, video and social content from an assignment.

·       Strong knowledge of sports and an understanding of high school athletics.

·       Ability to work quickly and accurately under deadline.

·       Ability to manage multiple assignments, platforms and deadlines simultaneously.

·       Flexible schedule with regular evening and weekend availability during sports seasons.

·       Reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout the Upstate of SC.

Preferred Skills:

Experience with livestreaming, podcasting or sports broadcast production is a plus, as is familiarity with AP style, CMS platforms, SEO, audience analytics and graphic design. Experience building an audience or growing engagement through social media would be especially valuable.

Work Environment:

This is a remote position, but it is not a work-from-home-only position. The Digital Sports Reporter will spend significant time in the community covering games, practices, schools, press conferences, interviews and other events in person. Evening and weekend work is a regular part of the position, particularly during high school sports seasons.
