General Manager, College Newspaper
We’re seeking an experienced and resourceful General Manager to lead the business functions of Student Life, the independent student newspaper at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative, media-savvy professional who values student journalism and can help a respected campus publication thrive financially and operationally in this changing media environment.
This is more than an administrative position — it is a leadership role that helps sustain independent student journalism. The General Manager plays a vital part in ensuring that the newspaper remains financially stable, operationally strong and positioned to serve students for years to come.
Produced by some 150 student journalists, Student Life publishes a daily newsletter, a weekly print edition with a circulation of approximately 5,000 copies, and digital content on studlife.com and social media platforms. Student Life operates on an annual budget of approximately $400,000 and serves as an essential voice for the WashU community.
Job Description
The General Manager oversees all non-editorial aspects of the newspaper, including:
Manage the newspaper’s annual operating budget and ensure fiscal responsibility
Oversee payroll, purchasing, bookkeeping and financial reporting
Identify opportunities for growth
Supervise business office staff and coordinate daily operations
Collaborate with student editors on non-content matters in a supportive, professional manner
Build and maintain strong relationships with campus departments, vendors, and community partners
Help develop and implement short- and long-term strategic and operational goals
Serve as a liaison to the newspaper’s board and ensure effective communication across all stakeholders
Promote an efficient, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, management, communications, media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
At least three years of management, supervisory, and/or sales experience
Strong financial management, budgeting, and accounting skills
The ability to work independently while collaborating closely with multiple partners, including student editors, university personnel, vendors, advertisers and members of the WUSMI board.
Established methods for time management and professional communication that ensure deadlines are met, and internal and external partners receive punctual updates
Experience with news media, social media, or a college newspaper is a plus
Familiarity with Macintosh computers, desktop publishing software and other standard business and media tools as well as knowledge of website infrastructure is a plus
