About Us

For over 160 years, The Warrensburg Star-Journal has delivered high-quality, award-winning journalism to Warrensburg and Johnson County [1]. As a twice-weekly newspaper with an 1,100-circulation, we punch above our weight—capturing the hard news, vibrant community events, and human-interest stories that matter most to our readers.

Warrensburg is a thriving community of 20,000, famous as the home of the University of Central Missouri and the legendary "Old Drum." We sit just 10 miles from Whiteman Air Force Base and less than an hour's drive from the Kansas City metro area.

The Role: What You Will Do
We are looking for a versatile, sharp storyteller to join our tight-knit newsroom. In this role, you will bridge traditional print journalism with dynamic digital media.
  • Own the Beat: Lead coverage on several critical hard news beats, holding local institutions accountable and reporting with accuracy.
  • Tell Community Stories: Look beyond the meetings to find and write engaging features and cover vital local events.
  • Think Multimedia: Capture your own high-quality photos and produce digital assets to bring your stories to life online.
  • Drive Digital Engagement: Help expand our online presence and engage with our audience across social media platforms.
  • Support Special Projects: Write and curate content for focused, themed special sections throughout the year.

What We Look For
  • Background: A degree in journalism, communication, or a related field, and/or equivalent professional newsroom experience.
  • Style & Mechanics: A strong command of AP Style is a must.
  • Technical Savvy: Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and content management systems is highly preferred.
  • Deadline-Driven: The ability to thrive under pressure and consistently clear strict nightly deadlines.
  • Adaptability: A flexible schedule to cover evening municipal meetings or breaking community events as they happen.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A professional demeanor to build deep trust with local sources and work seamlessly alongside our editorial team.

Why Join Us?
  • Strong Backing: Benefit from the resources, career growth potential, and stability of being part of Carpenter Media Group.
  • Total Rewards: We offer a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, and a supportive, collaborative environment where your voice matters.
  • Equal Opportunity: Carpenter Media Group is an equal opportunity employer.
