Summary:

Southern California News Group seeks a nimble, focused journalist to serve as a reporter for the Grunion Gazette newspaper, a local news tradition in the city of Long Beach since 1978. The job is a busy blend of reporting and writing. Content is a mix of government news, community happenings, things to do, and more. The papers are delivered free to residences, city libraries, tourist destinations, businesses, and outdoor venues where the community shops, meets, and greets.

Although this is a remote position, candidates must reside in Southern California.

What you will do:

• Deliver timely breaking news in a competitive market
• Produce and polish local enterprise and other news for online, mobile, and email newsletters, as well as print platforms
• Cultivate sources in person and via social media
• Operate virtually in the field and fully connect with the community
• Exemplify strong news judgment
• Report on issues such as the state's housing crisis, housing density, protection of historic homes, environmental concerns, quality schools, and growth

What you will bring:

• Knowledge of the Long Beach area
• 3–4 years of experience reporting
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or a related field
• Excellent writing and reporting skills, including knowledge of AP style
• Strong understanding of social media
• Basic photo and/or video skills are a plus

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage is $24.04 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:
