Upper East Site is seeking a Full-Time Staff News Reporter to join our growing team of journalists.

You’ll be expected to help build our reputation as the Upper East Side’s news leader by breaking neighborhood news, holding the powerful accountable, and enterprising engaging community stories.

Our ideal candidate is a driven, self-starting storyteller with the instincts to generate and execute original story ideas independently.

Two years of prior daily newsroom experience is required. Candidates must be based in New York City. Photography skills required.

Upper East Site is a fast-growing, independent and non-partisan local news source known for its hard-hitting coverage of the Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods of Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Responsibilities

• Breaking news on your beat
• Generating original story ideas daily
• Writing, producing or contributing to 8 to 10 or more published pieces per week
• Delivering clean, publication-ready copy that requires minimal editing
• Producing articles independently in WordPress, bringing each piece to publication-ready status
• Conducting interviews, street canvassing, and community reporting
• Cultivating sources across the Upper East Side and New York City
• Attending community board meetings, civic events, and public hearings as assigned
• Collaborating with our team of journalists

• Strong news instinct and sound judgment
• Impeccable ethics
• Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise copy on deadline
• Ability to build and foster positive relationships with the community
• Familiarity with the Upper East Side
• Team player who works collaboratively

Compensation

The Staff News Reporter position starts at $48,000/year. Benefits include a $125/mo ($1,500/year) health insurance stipend, 10 days paid vacation, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and 8 paid holidays.
