Description

Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation (RMSMC) is an independent non profit,

award-winning, nationally recognized student media company located on-campus and closely

affiliated with Colorado State University. RMSMC is home to student-run outlets such as 90.5

KCSU-FM, CTV, The Rocky Mountain Collegian and College Ave Magazine. RMSMC is seeking

a part-time student media adviser to help student journalists of The Rocky Mountain Collegian

and College Ave Magazine hone their craft, grow as journalists and engage their Northern

Colorado audience.

The student media adviser is one member of a 10-person professional team, and the support to

approximately 100 student employees and volunteers. This is a part-time position starting in

October 2026 and ending at the end of the academic year on May 7, 2027, with the potential to

be extended after an evaluation period. Should the applicant be extended through the summer

semester, the primary focus of the role will shift to grant writing and fundraising activities until

the following academic year. This role has the potential to develop into a full time position if

budgetary constraints allow.

Reports To

President and CEO of Rocky Mountain Student Media

Position Requirements

● Critique and give actionable feedback on stories by student journalists at Rocky

Mountain Student Media with a strong emphasis on The Rocky Mountain Collegian and

College Avenue magazine

● Maintain a welcoming environment for staff and visitors; encourage diversity in media

coverage and student viewpoints; and treat everyone with dignity and respect

● Stay abreast of digital media and other emerging technologies, including training and

support for a student digital media team

● Organize and submit promising student contest entries locally and nationally

● Onboard new volunteer and paid student journalists

● Manage and foster recruitment opportunities for new RMSMC students

● Maintain and improve upon current training programs

● Follow the Society of Professional Journalists and RMSMC code of ethics, along with the

publication’s desired style

● Work on-site at Colorado State University at least two days per week

● Attend weekly desk meetings after 5 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters and other

need-based meetings● Occasionally copy-edit corporate communications

Minimum qualifications

● Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or equivalent experience

● A passion for mentoring, teaching and supporting college students

● 3+ years experience working as a professional journalist in a digital-first newsroom

● 2+ years experience demonstrating complex project or team management

● Extremely organized and punctual to facilitate working with a large ~100 person team

● A commitment to students' First Amendment rights to determine media content by

training student editors and reporters to serve their local audience

● Experience pitching and writing stories in engaging and new formats

● An understanding of how to utilize print and digital media to their fullest potentials

● Demonstrated experience giving constant and actionable feedback

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience writing investigative hard news and stories around sensitive topics

● 1+ year of formal teaching or training experience

● A demonstrated understanding of how to write for an audience

● Direct experience covering underrepresented communities

● Proficient in Spanish language

● Experience in writing grants and general fundraising

● Experience in sports reporting

● Experience in SEO/AEO optimization

● Experience in audience surveying and analytics

● Experience in narrative and longform storytelling

Compensation

● Paid salary of 20 hours per week

● This is a part-time position starting October 2026 ending on May 07, 2027 with the

potential to be extended after an evaluation period.

● Salary range: $20-$26 Hourly
