The Press-Republican is seeking an experienced, energetic Managing Editor to lead our newsroom and help shape the next chapter of local journalism in northeastern New York.
Based in Plattsburgh, N.Y., this is an opportunity for a journalist who believes deeply in the value of strong local reporting—and wants the chance to lead a newsroom where the work truly matters.
The Press-Republican serves communities throughout Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties, delivering local journalism across digital and print platforms. We are a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour news organization, with print editions published three days each week and an ongoing commitment to breaking news, enterprise reporting, community coverage and compelling storytelling.
What You’ll Do
As Managing Editor, you will set the tone and direction of the newsroom while working closely with reporters, photographers, sports staff and regional leadership.
You will:
    •    Lead daily and long-term news coverage across digital and print platforms.
    •    Coach and develop reporters while fostering strong, community-focused journalism.
    •    Identify enterprise stories that go beyond meetings and events to explain the issues affecting North Country residents.
    •    Maintain strong standards for accuracy, fairness, ethics and journalistic excellence.
    •    Develop coverage strategies around breaking news, government, education, business, public safety, community life and regional issues.
    •    Strengthen audience engagement through digital-first storytelling, social media, newsletters and other platforms.
    •    Build relationships throughout the communities we serve while maintaining the newsroom's independence and credibility.
    •    Help create a newsroom culture that values initiative, collaboration, creativity and accountability.
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate is a journalist and leader who understands that successful community journalism requires both strong news judgment and a willingness to innovate.
You should bring:
    •    Professional newsroom experience, preferably including editing or leadership responsibilities.
    •    Excellent news judgment, writing and editing skills.
    •    The ability to manage breaking news while also developing meaningful enterprise journalism.
    •    Experience coaching reporters and helping journalists grow.
    •    An understanding of digital publishing, audience development and multimedia storytelling.
    •    Strong organizational and communication skills.
    •    A collaborative leadership style and the ability to thrive in a changing media environment.
    •    A passion for local journalism and telling stories that cannot be found anywhere else.
