Newsday/David Laventhol Visiting Professorship 

The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time visiting professorship during the 2027-2028 academic year, renewable for up to one additional year.

We are seeking a leading practitioner and instructor in journalism who can help students understand fast-paced news environments and the changing demands of the profession. The visitor is expected to teach core courses, such as Reporting and Image and Sound, in which students produce work often focusing on municipal government, courts, education, diverse communities and similar lines of reporting near our New York campus.

As the Newsday/David Laventhol Visiting Professor, the successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in reporting on diversity in media issues. Teaching assignments may include teaching a foundational Reporting or Image and Sound course and/or a seminar in the candidate’s specialty area, supervising masters’ projects, and advising students. The candidate may also contribute to the Master of Arts program as well as the dual degree journalism and computer science program.

The ideal candidate would have a substantial publishing record as well as experience as a teacher, writer and editor. Candidates with the ability to teach investigative reporting as well as demonstrated experience with multimedia production and data are preferred.

To qualify for this visiting professorship, the candidate must currently hold an appointment at another academic institution.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

This visiting professorship is expected to be appointed from July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2028, pending administrative approval, with the possibility of reappointment for one additional year.
