Description:

Ready to take your first step into newsroom leadership? The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register are looking for a community editor who loves local journalism and wants to grow as an editor, coach and newsroom leader.

Based in Wheeling, W.Va., less than an hour from downtown Pittsburgh, you’ll cover communities where West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio meet — a region with deep history, distinctive neighborhoods and readers who depend on their local newspapers.

This is a hands-on, on-site opportunity to build leadership skills while staying close to the work that brought you into journalism. You’ll help shape daily coverage, develop story ideas, edit copy and support reporters while producing compelling journalism yourself. You’ll learn to balance daily demands with enterprise reporting and help make our coverage essential to the communities we serve.

You don’t need to have held an editor’s title to be a strong candidate. Perhaps you’re a reporter who colleagues turn to for advice, someone who enjoys helping a story come together, or an early-career editor ready for more responsibility. We’re looking for sound news judgment, curiosity, initiative and a willingness to learn.

You might be the right person if you:

·       Have reporting or editing experience and want to grow into newsroom leadership.

·       Care about accurate, fair and engaging community coverage.

·       Enjoy collaborating with colleagues and helping others do their best work.

·       Can spot a promising story, ask good questions and strengthen a piece of writing.

·       Bring new ideas for reaching readers in print and online.

·       Are organized, dependable and ready to take ownership of your work.

We offer competitive pay and benefits. We’re committed to building newsrooms that reflect the diversity of the communities we cover.

To apply, send your resume, a cover letter explaining why you’re ready for this opportunity, and your desired compensation range to jmccabe@theintelligencer.net with “Community Editor” in the subject line.
