Description:
The Portland Press Herald, part of the Maine Trust for Local News, seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to join our team of editors.
We are an ambitious news organization with high standards and a talented staff, and we need a strong leader to help to grow our audience and have positive impacts on our communities and state. We aim to do it all – breaking news, compelling narratives, accountability reporting, data-driven journalism with engaging interactives.
For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity. But you must be able to juggle a lot: big enterprise stories, medium-length dailies and breaking news. The news editor will supervise five to six reporters and work closely with other assignment editors, digital and visual teams.
The right candidate for this position possesses all of these qualities and skills: You work with reporters as each story is conceived and throughout its development. You enjoy working collaboratively with your own staff and with other editors. You see story ideas everywhere. You ask a lot of questions and prosecute stories. You think visually. You see interactive and multimedia potential in every idea. You monitor coverage in other publications. You work with a sense of urgency. You give regular feedback to your staff.
If you are the best at what you do and share our passion for ambitious journalism, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. A minimum of five years of daily news experience is required.
The Maine Trust is the largest news organization in Maine, and comprises four daily newspapers, including the Press Herald. We are owned by the National Trust for Local News, a national nonprofit dedicated to conserving, transforming and sustaining local news organizations. We work in one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Our offices are based in South Portland and easily accessible to the Greater Portland area.
This position is paid $75,000 to $83,000 annually.
We also offer:
Health, Dental and Vision Insurance
Short/Long Term Disability & Life Insurance
Employee Assistance Program
401k with company match
We are an EEO employer.
Please send your resume, cover letter and clips you have edited or produced to Managing Editor Julia Arenstam, jarenstam@pressherald.com.
