Want to do journalism that actually matters to people? Come cover New Braunfels and Comal County in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung is looking for a curious, ambitious reporter to join our newsroom and take the lead on education coverage.

You’ll be the reporter people know when something happens at their school. You’ll cover school boards, classrooms, teachers, students and extracurriculars — but you’ll also look beyond the obvious stories to find the issues, people and trends that deserve attention.

We want someone who doesn’t just wait for a press release. We want someone who goes looking for the story.

What You’ll Do

• Own our education beat and build relationships with school officials, teachers, students, parents and community leaders.
• Cover school board meetings and other education-related events.
• Find original stories that go beyond meeting agendas and announcements.
• Tell compelling stories about the people who make our schools and community unique.
• Cover breaking news and other local events when news happens.
• Jump into coverage of local government, public safety, community events, features and whatever else the day throws at us.
• Take photos and video when the story calls for it.
• Bring story ideas to the newsroom — and chase the ones that make you say, “People need to know about this.”
• Use social media and digital platforms to reach readers where they are.

Who We’re Looking For

Maybe you’re a journalism graduate looking for your first real newsroom.

Maybe you’ve spent a couple of years reporting and you’re ready to have a beat of your own.

Maybe you’re already covering a community and want the opportunity to do more.

Whatever your experience level, we’re looking for someone who is hungry to learn and willing to work.

You should be:

• A strong writer who knows how to tell a story.
• Curious enough to keep asking questions.
• Comfortable talking to anyone — from a superintendent to a student sitting in the back of a classroom.
• Willing to knock on doors, make phone calls and chase down answers.
• Comfortable working on deadline.
• Interested in becoming part of the community you cover.
• Passionate about local journalism and the difference good reporting can make.
