St. John Valley News Reporter

The Bangor Daily News is looking for a smart, enterprising news reporter to cover Maine's St. John Valley. This is a role for a journalist who thrives on developing sources in tight-knit communities and wants to own coverage of one of the most remote, distinctive regions in the continental U.S.

What you'll do

This job focuses on comprehensive, aggressive news coverage across the Valley — from Van Buren to Allagash, including the college town of Fort Kent. You'd cover the University of Maine's northernmost campus, local government and police, an independent hospital, one of Maine's last paper mills, and border issues with Canada. You'll chase the scoops that matter in small communities, build the sources that make that possible, and cover signature regional events like the annual dogsled race that draws Iditarod-bound mushers from around the world. Your work will appear on the BDN's website, daily print newspaper, and hyperlocal print and web products.

What you bring

• Experience as a reporter, with skill in developing sources in small or insular communities

• An aggressive, self-starting approach and a drive to land important scoops

• Comfort working independently and moving quickly on daily news

• Genuine interest in the Valley's Acadian French culture, outdoors lifestyle and regional issues

• Strong news judgment and clear, direct writing

• Willingness to live in or near the St. John Valley (moose sightings all but guaranteed)
