The Herald Seeks Freelance Reporters and Contributing Writers
The New Pine Plains Herald, an award-winning nonprofit weekly newsroom serving the rural Hudson Valley communities of Pine Plains, Ancram, Gallatin, Milan, and Stanford, is seeking a general assignment freelance reporter. Since launching in 2022, the Herald has earned multiple awards including New York Press Association awards for excellence and the national Institute for Nonprofit News’ Community Champion Award for reporting that created lasting local impact.
We are looking to add freelance reporters and contributing writers to join our team of contributors, reporters, and our award winning editor. This freelance role offers the opportunity to grow with the newsroom.
Responsibilities:
Report on local government meetings, community events, and breaking news in person.
Pitch and write enterprise features, profiles, and human-interest stories relevant to our readers.
File concise and accurate reports on deadline (typically 1–3 stories per week).
Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief to identify story ideas that reflect the concerns and experiences of our region.
Compensation:
Competitive rates per article and gas reimbursement.
Requirements:
Strong writing and reporting skills, with clips that demonstrate clarity, accuracy, and local focus.
Must live within 30–45 minutes of Pine Plains, N.Y., with reliable transportation (car required).
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
Familiarity with AP style preferred.
Familiarity with photography a plus.
