Description:
Decoding Bio is the leading media brand at the intersection of AI and biology. We write for the operators, investors, and researchers building the companies that will define the next era of life sciences.
Decoding Bio is part of Arkaea Media Group, which is building the definitive media, events, and intelligence platform for critical technology. Arkaea delivers high-quality journalism and actionable insights that shape the business, policy, and investment decisions underpinning the industries driving 21st-century technological competitiveness. Our brand portfolio includes Payload (space), Tectonic (defense tech), Ignition (energy), and Decoding Bio (biotechnology).
We’re looking for a Senior Reporter who’s more than a writer—you’re a builder. You’re deeply curious about biotech, energized by the AI-biology intersection, and eager to help shape the defining news brand in the sector. You bring sharp editorial instincts, a strong and growing network of sources, and the ambition to break stories that move markets, influence conversations, and make an impact. You’re not waiting for the next story to land—you’re constantly looking for the signal, chasing the lead, and finding the angle others missed.
At Decoding Bio, you’ll have the opportunity to do meaningful work from day one, build your voice and reputation, and grow alongside the company. This role offers a clear path to Editor as Decoding Bio scales.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
As a Senior Reporter, you will be the editorial face of Decoding Bio's newsletter product. You'll set the pace, set the standard, and set the agenda for how the AI-biology category gets covered.
Break original, consequential news that the rest of the industry follows
Generate a steady pipeline of stories independently, balancing breaking news with longer-form reporting
Build and own relationships with the founders, investors, scientists, and operators driving the AI-bio category, across pharma, biotech VC, AI labs, and academic computational biology
Translate complex technical, regulatory, and business topics into accessible reporting for a senior, time-constrained audience
Develop Decoding Bio's editorial voice in close collaboration with Arkaea's editorial leadership and the editors of Payload, Tectonic, and Ignition. Curious, sharp, technically rigorous, and not afraid of a strong take, while maintaining brand continuity across the Arkaea portfolio
Collaborate with the Decoding Bio team, Arkaea's editorial leadership, and the broader Arkaea team on event programming, speaker bookings, and live formats
COMPETENCIES
Entrepreneurial instincts. You want to build a brand, not just file copy
Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and a willingness to acknowledge mistakes and move quickly
Excellent writing, editing, and fact-checking skills with a sharp eye for detail and accuracy
The ability to synthesize information from scientific papers, technical documents, interviews, and reporting into clear narratives with real insight
A point of view on where the industry is going and the confidence to defend it
Collaborative mindset. Comfortable working alongside other editors and reporters across Arkaea's brands, contributing to a unified editorial standard while building something distinct
Comfort working in a fast-paced, remote, startup-style environment
QUALIFICATIONS
7+ years of experience in journalism, reporting, or editorial writing, with a track record of breaking original stories in biotech, life sciences, or adjacent technology
Deep sourcing across pharma, biotech VC, AI labs working on biology, or academic computational biology
A following on X, LinkedIn, or Substack that reflects industry trust
Background in biology, chemistry, computational biology, or related fields is not required, but technical fluency and a strong desire to go deeper is essential
Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required by the news cycle
Willingness to travel up to 25% for conferences, events, and on-the-ground reporting
PAY TRANSPARENCY
Our salary ranges are based on verified market data and our philosophy of paying competitively for our size and industry. Final compensation will be determined by the candidate’s geographic location, experience, competencies/skills, internal equity, and market conditions.
The salary range for this role is $100,000 – $150,000. This role is also eligible for a performance bonus and equity.
