Role Description The regional reporter is a full-time, on-site role located in Norfolk, NE. This position is responsible for covering regional news, including local government, community events, public safety, and human-interest stories, with an emphasis on accuracy, fairness and timeliness. Day-to-day tasks include researching and developing story ideas, conducting interviews, verifying information, and writing clear, engaging news articles for print and online platforms. The regional reporter also will collaborate with editors and other newsroom staff on story planning, contribute to multimedia coverage such as photos or short video clips, and attend meetings or events as needed to maintain strong community connections. The role requires meeting deadlines, adapting to breaking news situations, and upholding the publication’s standards of ethical journalism.
Qualifications
- Strong reporting skills, including newsgathering, interviewing, and story development.
- Excellent writing and news writing abilities, with the capacity to produce clear, accurate, and engaging content.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with sources, colleagues, and community members.
- Basic multimedia skills, such as photography, video, or audio recording, for digital and social media platforms.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Knowledge of AP style and best practices in ethical, non-discriminatory reporting.
- Ability to work on-site in Norfolk, NE, manage multiple assignments, and meet daily deadlines.
- Familiarity with local or regional news coverage and comfort attending public meetings and community events.
- Proficiency with digital content management systems and basic computer applications.
