Description:

News Editor

This is a rare opportunity to become a leader in a family-owned and locally run news organization. The Valley News is a community institution in the beautiful Upper Valley, an area known for its outdoor lifestyle, high-tech businesses and leading academic institutions like Dartmouth College.

We're hiring a News Editor to help set the vision, tone and standards for our newsroom — print, digital, engagement and whatever comes next. You'll work with a team of editors inside our newsroom and across our family-owned company to help chart the future of local news.

About the Valley News

The Valley News is a digitally focused newsroom and 6-day-a-week paper serving communities on both sides of the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and Vermont. We believe local news is essential to a community's health, vitality and sense of itself, and we're backing that belief with continued investment:

  • We've rebuilt our digital tools and storytelling capabilities from the ground up.

  • We're growing into new ways to reach our audiences, including newsletters, apps and engagement opportunities.

  • We're part of a family-owned news group that understands what it actually takes to sustain great local journalism.

What you'll do

Help set the editorial vision

  • Help define what the Valley News covers, how, and why — across beats, formats and platforms.

  • Champion ambitious, people-centered journalism that reflects the full life of this community.

  • Set the pace for a newsroom that moves quickly and with authority toward the stories that matter most.

Be a Leader

  • Help build and manage all aspects of the newsroom.

  • Recruit, develop and retain journalists who want to do career-defining work here.

  • Create a culture where reporters feel supported taking on ambitious stories.

Drive the future of the organization

  • Help lead a genuinely digital-first operation without abandoning what makes print work. We have many devoted print and e-paper readers.

  • Partner with audience, product and business leaders to grow our readership and how people connect with us.

  • Help decide where and how AI, new formats and new platforms fit into our journalism, deliberately, dependably and transparently and maintain our readers’ trust.

Represent the Valley News

  • Be a visible, credible voice for the newsroom with readers, sources and the broader community.

  • Work directly with the publisher, other editors in our news group and the company’s senior leadership on the organization's long-term direction.

Add Your Voice

  • Our editors still report because we believe editing makes you a better reporter and reporting makes you a better editor.

  • You’ll get to choose which stories and beats can work into your weekly duties.

Who you are

  • A journalist with newsroom leadership experience — you've run a desk, a section or a newsroom before, and you're ready for a bigger role. Or maybe you’re someone who has displayed a high level of reporting and you feel you’re ready for this role. We want to hear from you too.

  • Someone with a clear point of view on what great local journalism looks like, and the judgment to execute it under real deadline pressure.

  • A builder of people and their careers. You measure your success partly by how far the people you've led have gone.

  • A team player who wants to work with, teach and learn from colleagues at all levels of our company.

  • Genuinely energized by change and understanding the evolving digital news landscape.

What we offer

  • A top editorial seat at a respected, award-winning local news organization.

  • Real backing from ownership to invest in the journalism and the people who make it.

  • A newsroom already in motion, with rebuilt digital tools, growing audio and newsletter products, and a company commitment to add tools where needed.

  • Competitive salary and a strong benefits package.

  • Life in the Upper Valley — home to Dartmouth College, the Connecticut River, and a stretch of New Hampshire and Vermont known for its arts scene, outdoor opportunities and its high quality of life.

Our philosophy

We believe the best local journalism:

  • Starts with people.

  • Earns trust through accuracy and accountability.

  • Reflects the full life of a community — not just its meetings and press releases.

  • Never stops evolving to meet readers where they are.

We're not standing still. We're looking for the leader who wants to make sure we don't.
