Description:
Senior Enterprise Editor
Location: North Carolina; Triangle-area preferred
Employment Type: Full-time
This role will report to our executive editor, serve on our senior leadership team, and manage both reporters and freelancers. We are looking for a dynamic journalist who excels at finding distinctive angles and driving revelatory reporting on power and place across North Carolina.
This editor should excel at both structural and line edits, while also finding, commissioning, and framing stories around original insights and universal themes that resonate with readers. While we prioritize deep-dives, investigations, and features, the ideal candidate is also ready to move quickly when scoops and or the news cycle demands.
We are looking for someone who is excited to work in an ambitious young outlet that is thinking hard about audience and business strategy. As a company, we prioritize experimentation and trying new things; this editor must demonstrate flexibility and creativity. While you will not be directly responsible for producing a newsletter or executing our event strategy, interest in both is a plus.
The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in journalism, including time spent as both a reporter and editor. Experience working in North Carolina is a plus but not required; we will need the person to be located in the state within 30 days of their first day.
Responsibilities
- Story editing, including features, investigations, and shorter news items
- Managing and editing a team of reporters, as well as freelancers
- Working with reporters to develop their reporting, writing, and news judgement
- Collaborating on editorial strategy, including story commissioning and beat refinement.
- Working across teams to produce and optimize our website, newsletters, and events.
- Assisting with story layout and CMS management
Qualifications
- At least 10 years experience in journalism, including time spent reporting and editing
- The ability to shape stories while preserving reporters’ voices and ensuring the highest possible editorial standards.
- Familiarity with the standards and ethics of journalism as well as The Assembly’s style of long-form, narrative reporting
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively
Salary and Benefits
The salary range is commensurate with experience. We strive to be as transparent as possible in the interview process about what we can offer, and ask that you let us know your needs. We offer a competitive benefits package, including health care, parental leave, and life insurance.
How to Apply
To apply, we invite candidates to submit answers to the following questions:
- Tell us about a favorite story or project you have worked on, either as a reporter or editor. What made it stand out for you?
- What makes a good story great? What role should editors play in that process?
- What should our newsroom be doing to continue establishing The Assembly as the authoritative place for statewide news? Where are we succeeding and failing so far?
- What excites you most about this role? What makes you nervous?
Submit answers in a Google Doc or pdf, along with your resume, three references, and links to three writing or editing samples to jobs@theassemblync.com. You do not need to send a cover letter. We will begin reviewing applications on September 1, 2026.
