Lifestyle Editor/Reporter
Cascadia Media Company seeks a multi-skilled lifestyle editor/reporter to write and manage vibrant, thoughtful lifestyle coverage for a daily digital website, weekly print edition and quarterly magazine. This is a great opportunity to produce spirited features coverage in a uniquely beautiful part of the country for a vibrant, locally owned publication.
The job: The lifestyle editor works as a reporter and an editor, writing enterprise and breaking news in the lifestyle sector while managing and editing a team of freelancers who produce content for online and print platforms.
Position details: Full-time, benefits-eligible, newsroom-based with some hybrid work allowed. Shifts will include evening and occasional night and weekend work. Requires residence in Whatcom or Skagit County, Washington.
Reports to: Managing Editor, News; works closely with the Executive Editor, Cascadia Daily Life.
Pay range: $30 to $34/hour, DOE
Key duties:
Identify unique local and regional food and beverage, lifestyle trends, culture and entertainment coverage, bringing a sophisticated eye and approach to stories that set us apart.
Write lifestyle content and news enterprise pieces for daily Cascadia Daily News and quarterly Cascadia Daily Life, aimed at audiences of younger singles, families, and active seniors. Bring your knowledge of and connections to diverse audiences and businesses to our site and print editions.
Produce quick-turn news stories for our website and longer enterprise stories for online and print. Ability to plan content months in advance.
Manage the story planning and assist in editing of content produced by about five contributors who write about entertainment, food, beverage and more for the newspaper.
Coordinate long-term story planning with the Cascadia Daily Life editor.
Attend weekly staff meetings and individual planning sessions with the Managing Editor and other staff as needed.
Work collaboratively with a team of visual journalists and editors, thinking about photo and video opportunities for our social channels to engage audiences.

Essential skills:
A high motor and strong work ethic.
Ability to juggle multiple stories and deadlines at a time.
Great voice and knowledge of when it’s appropriate.
Exceptional organizational and planning skills.
Comfortable working with contributors who may or may not come from a journalism background.
Keen editing skills with an eye not only for text errors but weak ledes, framing issues and missing voices.
Intimate familiarity with Associated Press Style and in-house style guide exceptions.
Strict attention to detail and fact-checking.
Strong grounding in media ethics consistent with brand and community mission.
Beneficial skills:
Photojournalism experience; comfortable using a DSLR.
Familiarity with Slack, WordPress, MS Office, Google Docs and Sheets, Outlook, other industry-standard digital tools.
Experience or familiarity with trends and hot issues in the Pacific Northwest region.
Minimum requirements:
Legal authority to cross the Canadian border to report.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
3-5 years’ reporting experience, preferably in a professional digital daily journalism environment.
2-3 years’ editing experience preferred.
