Description:
Looking for the next step in your journalism career? This could be it.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette — one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in the country — is looking for a Deputy News Editor / Reporter ready to do it all: chase breaking news, shape opinion pages, edit with a sharp eye, and help lead a historic newsroom into its digital future. If you want a job where no two days look alike and your work actually matters to the community you cover, keep reading.
Western Massachusetts is one of the most vibrant, story-rich corners of New England — college towns, small farms, local politics, and a fiercely engaged readership. This isn't a role where you'll be siloed into one beat or one skill. You'll report, you'll edit, you'll help grow our digital audience, and you'll have a real hand in how this newsroom evolves. If you're the kind of journalist who wants range — and the mentorship of veteran editors while you build it — this is a rare opportunity to grow fast.
What You'll Do
Assist the executive editor and managing editor with editing daily news coverage
Help select, edit, and prepare stories for the Amherst Bulletin and its website
Support the executive editor with letters to the editor and other opinion content
Report and file local news on deadline — breaking news, local government, business, enterprise, and feature stories
Take photos and video to help bring stories to life
Contribute to curated newsletters and social media strategy as part of our digital-first push
Represent the Gazette at community and public events
Be available to consult with on-duty editors on nights and weekends as needed
What You Bring
A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field
At least three years of local news experience (editing experience a plus)
A curious, organized mind and an unwavering commitment to fairness and accuracy
Comfort working across platforms — social media newsroom experience preferred
Proficiency in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office
Strong people skills — you'll work closely with reporters, editors, and photographers every day
A genuine openness to change and new ways of telling stories
The Kind of Person Who Thrives Here
Someone who's organized but not rigid. Patient but persistent. A team player who can also work independently on deadline. Someone ready to embrace a newsroom in transition — and help lead that transition, not just watch it happen. If you're an early-career journalist looking for the role that stretches you — reporting, editing, and shaping the future of local news — we want to hear from you.
