Description:
Managing Editor
The Laconia Daily Sun
Laconia, New Hampshire
The Laconia Daily Sun is seeking a hands-on Managing Editor to help lead a small, busy newsroom that still believes local news matters.
This is a hands-on editing job first. We need an experienced journalist who can help get the paper out: write stories, edit copy, assign coverage, manage reporters, lay out pages, watch deadlines, and keep our daily print and digital report moving.
The right person will also have the judgment, steadiness, and interest to take on broader newsroom leadership. We are looking for a strong second-in-command who can bring order, follow-through, and calm daily management to the newsroom.
The Managing Editor will work closely with Editor Julie Hart and play a central role in our daily operation.
Responsibilities
Write and edit local news stories.
Assign and track reporter work across local government, schools, courts, business, features, and community life.
Edit copy for accuracy, fairness, clarity, and tone.
Lay out pages, coordinate with production and design, and manage print deadlines.
Help manage digital presentation, the e-edition, and online news workflow.
Help screen and evaluate newsroom candidates and mentor staff.
Support a practical, organized, and supportive newsroom culture.
Ideal Qualifications
Strong reporting, writing, and editing experience in a daily or weekly newsroom.
Sharp news judgment and a steady hand under deadline pressure.
Page layout experience, preferably with InDesign, and comfort with print production.
Familiarity with digital publishing and online news workflow.
Proven ability to guide reporters, track assignments, and keep workflow moving.
Respect for local news and a desire to live and work in the Lakes Region.
A practical, organized approach and a willingness to step into a small newsroom where everyone helps.
Note on Work Location
This is not a remote management job. It is an in-person, working editor position in our Laconia newsroom. The Managing Editor must be comfortable editing, assigning, laying out pages, and stepping directly into the work when needed.
About Us
The Laconia Daily Sun is a family-owned newspaper serving the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. We publish in print and online and are actively investing in stronger local journalism, better digital presentation, and a stronger newsroom structure.
Compensation & Application
Salary: Competitive and based on experience.
To apply: Send a resume, cover letter, and 3 to 5 work samples to adam@laconiadailysun.com
Please include examples that show reporting, editing, page design, digital work, or newsroom leadership.
Finalists may be asked to complete a short editing and news judgment exercise.
