Description:

Part-Time Reporter — Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

Come join the newsroom at the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber, an award-winning weekly newspaper serving the more than 10,000 people who call Vashon and Maury islands home.

We are looking for a curious, energetic and community-minded part-time reporter who wants to tell stories that matter — and gain experience covering just about every kind of beat along the way.

This is an ideal position for an early-career journalist who wants hands-on experience reporting and writing for both print and the web in a small, ambitious newsroom. Because we cover an entire island community, our reporters do a little bit of everything: breaking news, local government and political reporting, public safety, education, health care, environmental issues, business, arts and culture, community events, profiles and long-form features.

One day, you might be covering a school board or fire district meeting. The next, you could be reporting on a breaking news story, interviewing a local artist, profiling an islander with an extraordinary life story or heading out to cover something unexpected unfolding in the community.

The reporter will pitch and develop original stories, conduct interviews, cover public meetings and breaking news, take photographs when needed, write for our weekly print edition and website, and help share our journalism through social media.

We are looking for someone who is excited about local journalism, comfortable talking to people from all walks of life and eager to become deeply familiar with the community they cover.

Position details:

  • 24-29 hours per week
  • At least one year of journalism or related experience required
  • Strong reporting, interviewing and writing skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet weekly deadlines and juggle multiple stories
  • Interest in both hard news and feature writing
  • Familiarity with AP style preferred
  • Photography and social media experience a plus
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and auto insurance

Compensation

  • Salary Range: $20 – $21 per hour
