Description:
Iowa Information Media Group is seeking an experienced editor to lead the newsroom operations in our Central Division, including the communities of Carroll, Jefferson, Coon Rapids and the surrounding areas.
The ideal candidate understands the critical role local journalism plays in keeping residents informed, government transparent and businesses connected.
This is a hands-on leadership position in which you will set editorial priorities, assign and edit stories, coach reporters, personally cover events and public meetings, and maintain a visible, engaged presence in the communities we serve. The editor will uphold high standards of accuracy, fairness and community relevance while meeting print and digital deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
· Set editorial priorities and direct coverage across three community newspapers.
· Develop ideas, assign stories, coordinate resources and manage deadlines.
· Edit copy for accuracy, clarity, fairness, style and journalistic standards.
· Coach reporters and provide constructive feedback.
· Report and write stories, including meetings, events and breaking news.
· Capture and edit photographs and video to support print and digital coverage.
· Build community relationships while maintaining editorial independence.
· Maintain a visible, approachable presence at community and civic events.
· Track local issues and ensure timely follow-up coverage.
· Write headlines and captions; publish website and email newsletter content; review proofs.
· Coordinate with other departments to meet deadlines and support special projects.
· Address reader questions, concerns and corrections professionally.
· Uphold legal and ethical standards, including accuracy, attribution, privacy, copyright and defamation.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
· Strong news judgment and commitment to accurate, fair and ethical journalism.
· Excellent reporting, interviewing, writing, editing and proofreading skills.
· Ability to lead reporters and work independently.
· Sound decision-making under pressure and strong organizational skills.
· Professional communication and judgment on sensitive issues.
· Commitment to community involvement and public representation.
· Proficiency with newsroom, website and email newsletter platforms.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
· Availability for occasional evening and weekend coverage.
Preferred Experience
· Previous reporting or editing experience at a community newspaper or other local news organization.
· Experience assigning stories, editing copy and mentoring reporters.
· Knowledge of public records, open meetings, local government and the issues affecting small communities.
· A degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
