Production Editor

About the Position

The Production Editor is a full-time, remote position responsible for supporting Mondoweiss’s daily editorial output. This role provides editing for articles from staff writers and commissioned freelancers, manages content publishing in Mondoweiss’s CMS, and helps the editorial team maintain an organized, accurate publishing schedule.

The Production Editor works closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Palestine Editorial Director, and editorial staff to ensure that published content meets Mondoweiss’s editorial standards and schedule. This role is focused on editorial quality and production throughput. An ideal candidate will have a desire to learn and a deep commitment to advancing Mondoweiss’s mission.

The Production Editor reports to the Editor-in-Chief.

Responsibilities

Editing

  • Edit articles from staff writers and commissioned freelancers for grammar, clarity, style, and consistency with Mondoweiss’s editorial voice and standards.
  • Conduct basic fact-checking for articles, including cross-referencing, single-source verification, and plausibility checks for articles.
  • Ensure all content is publication-ready before it goes live.
  • Provide developmental editorial feedback on select articles, including feedback on structure, flow, content, and whether a story meets the assignment brief.
  • Contribute to crafting and reviewing headlines and metadata for published articles.

Publishing and Production

  • Upload articles into Mondoweiss’s WordPress CMS and apply light layout, including text formatting, image placement, and metadata.
  • Publish articles immediately or schedule them for future publication in coordination with the editorial team and Editor-in-Chief.

Editorial Coordination

  • Maintain and update Mondoweiss’s publishing schedule in Trello, keeping article statuses and timelines accurate and up to date.
  • Coordinate regularly with the Editor-in-Chief, Palestine Editorial Director, editorial staff, and contributing writers on article status, scheduling, and production priorities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Prior experience in a newsroom, editorial, or publishing environment.
  • Demonstrated editing ability, including a strong command of English grammar, usage, and style, and excellent proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with AP Style or a comparable editorial style guide.
  • Comfort working in a content management system; WordPress experience is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple articles and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of Mondoweiss’ areas of coverage, including Palestine, Israel, U.S. politics, and policy as it relates to Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
  • Experience working with writers and publishing in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and reliably in a fully remote environment.
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to Mondoweiss’s editorial mission and the journalism we publish.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Candidates must be available to work regular hours in EST.
  • Applicants must be fluent in English.

Preferred

  • Experience with WordPress is strongly preferred.
  • Experience using Trello or a comparable project management or editorial tracking tool.
  • Familiarity with basic web publishing practices, including image sourcing, hyperlinking, and metadata entry.
  • Arabic-language skills.
  • Located in the United States.
