Description:
The New Hampshire Union Leader is looking for someone to join our production team to design and produce visually compelling pages for our print edition while also creating digital-first graphics for our website, apps, and social channels. This is a great fit for someone who loves the discipline of a hard print deadline as much as the flexibility of designing for screens.
You'll work closely with editors, reporters, and photo staff to turn stories into clear, engaging layouts — from front-page design to breaking-news graphics that need to go live in minutes.
What you'll do
- Design and layout newspaper pages to meet daily deadlines
- Create digital graphics, infographics, and visual assets optimized for web, mobile, and social media
- Resize and adapt print layouts for digital platforms (and vice versa) while preserving visual integrity
- Build charts, maps, and data visualizations to support reporting
- Collaborate with editors and reporters to translate story concepts into visual storytelling
- Maintain brand consistency and style guide standards across all platforms
- Manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
- Stay current on digital design trends, social media formats, and evolving publishing platforms
What you'll need:
- Portfolio demonstrating page layout and/or digital design work (print, publishing, or editorial design preferred)
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator required)
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools and/or CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Arc Publishing, or similar)
- Understanding of typography, grid systems, and visual hierarchy
- Ability to work efficiently under deadline pressure without sacrificing quality
- Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating with editorial staff
- A good eye for both traditional print design and digital/social-first visual formats
It would be nice if you had:
- Basic video editing or motion graphics skills for social content
- Photography or photo editing experience
- Prior newsroom or publishing experience
This role generally follows the newsroom's production schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, or holidays around press deadlines and breaking news. We are a collaborative newsroom - this is not a remote position.
How to apply
Please send a resume, cover letter, and portfolio (or link to online work samples) to Editor in Chief Melanie Hitchcock (mhitchcock@unionleader.com). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting Monday, Aug. 3.
