Description:
The Chronicle and Thurston Chronicle are seeking a skilled photographer or photo editor to join our growing award-winning newsroom based in Centralia, Wash.
The Chronicle publishes a robust print edition three times a week and maintains a daily presence at chronline.com. In addition, we work to provide multimedia content to our social media platforms. We are committed to local news and work to provide as much of it as possible on a daily basis.
The Chronicle is located midway between Seattle and Portland and within an hour drive to the mountains and the beach. We’re fortunate to have Mount Rainier National Park, Mount St. Helens and other outdoor treasures in our coverage area, making this job a good fit for a photojournalist with a taste for adventure.
CT Publishing, owner of The Chronicle, recently expanded with the launch of Thurston Chronicle, thurstonchronicle.com, covering news, events and sports across Thurston County. The candidate will also spend time at the Washington state Capitol covering the legislative session and other events when needed.
The Chronicle is a family-owned newspaper with owners who are present and supportive of the efforts of the newsroom. We’re well-equipped when it comes to cameras, computers and other gear, and our journalists are always provided with what they need to do their jobs.
CT Publishing offers health insurance, dental insurance and other benefits. Reporters and photographers are reimbursed for their mileage on assignments.
The estimated starting hourly rate would be $20 to $22 depending on experience. This could be negotiable for the right candidate. While The Chronicle is seeking a staff photographer, the photo editor position could be available to the right applicant.
Key responsibilities:
• Photograph breaking news, features, sports and community events.
• Edit, caption and organize images for publication in print and online formats.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors and newsroom leadership.
• Manage daily photo assignments while meeting deadlines.
• Produce multimedia content, including video and social media visuals, as needed.
• Adhere to the ethics of journalism, while having solid news judgement.
• Contribute creative ideas for creative projects and long-form storytelling.
• Some weekend and holiday work will be required.
• With high school sports coverage being an important part of our work, regular evening work will be required.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in photojournalism, journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating news, feature, sports and event photography.
• Proficiency with Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and PhotoMechanic.
• Experience with video production.
• Valid driver’s license and insurance.
• FAA Part 107 drone certification is a plus.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and link to a portfolio showcasing their best work to Editor-in-Chief Eric Schwartz at eschwartz@chronline.com.
