The Concord Monitor, a digitally driven daily newspaper and website in New Hampshire’s state capital, is looking to add an ambitious education reporter who will bring to light the biggest issues facing communities, schools, teachers, youth and families throughout the Capital Region and beyond.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about all things education in the Granite State and dedicated to bringing readers into the classroom through their reporting, tackling issues across the education spectrum, from pre-kindergarten to higher education, as well as how the system is funded. We are interested in exploring issues facing young people today, like the emergence of AI, social media use, mental health and job opportunities after college. The Monitor created a youth reader advisory board in the last year, which we hope to continue with a new cohort of high school students. The education reporter will direct the board and co-lead meetings alongside the Monitor’s community editor.

The reporter will be instrumental in shaping their beat and driving new ideas through daily stories, as well as an education-focused weekly newsletter and other digital initiatives. 

This role entails covering education funding, innovation in the classroom, equity and emerging policy trends, like school vouchers and open enrollment. The reporter will also cover several core communities that rely on the Monitor for their news and will be expected to contribute to breaking news coverage, a duty shared among Monitor staff.

In addition to daily reporting responsibilities, the education reporter will have an opportunity to work on enterprise and investigative stories as well as medium- and long-term projects. They will work with editors to refine their craft and pursue their curiosities in a newsroom consistently recognized as one of the best in New England. 

The following attributes make for an ideal reporter at the Concord Monitor: 

• An appreciation for the vital role of community watchdog journalism and a willingness to jump into the fray.
  

• An ability to work under tight deadlines with speed and precision.
  

• A desire to learn new skills and evolve with the industry. This can include digital infographics, locator maps, photography/video, searchable databases or anything you feel is vital to telling the story.
  

• A hunger to be heard. Reporters have a big voice in the newsroom, so you’ll need to come to the table with ideas.
  

The successful candidate should have proven writing experience, proficiency with social media, basic photo and video skills and an unflinching desire to get at the stories our readers need.
