Job Title: Features Reporter & Photographer
Job Description: Oil City News is seeking a talented, visually driven and community-minded Features Reporter & Photographer to capture the vibrant culture, history and people of Wyoming. We want a storyteller who can write the profile on a local fixture, uncover a fascinating piece of community history, and capture the energy of a packed concert or a high school athlete signing.
Based in Casper, you will serve as both a wordsmith and our primary staff photographer. You will be tasked with finding the human element in every story, spotlighting local businesses, and ensuring our coverage reflects the character of the community we serve. Your work will be published on Wyoming’s largest local news website and be featured prominently in the Oil City Weekly print newspaper, sharing the sights and stories of central Wyoming with hundreds of thousands of readers each month.
The ideal candidate understands that feature writing isn't "soft news" — it’s the connective tissue of a community. You’ll report to the Managing Editor and collaborate with our team of reporters at Oil City News.
Essential Functions:
Narrative Storytelling: Write deep-dive profiles, historical features and local business spotlights, among other features.
Visual Journalism: Serve as the primary staff photographer, ensuring high-quality imagery accompanies major stories.
Community Presence: Represent the brand at local concerts, community celebrations and high school milestone events.
Digital Growth: Produce highly shareable, visually engaging content that drives audience connection.
Responsibilities:
Generate original feature content for our digital-first platforms and weekly print edition.
Shoot, edit, and archive publication-ready photographs for daily news and features.
Build a network of sources within the local arts, business and historical communities.
Monitor community trends and reader discussions on brand platforms and social media.
Maintain readiness for rapid-turnaround human-interest stories when unexpected community moments arise.
Prerequisites:
Proven experience in feature writing and professional-level digital photography.
Must live in or be willing to relocate to the Casper, Wyoming area.
Strong portfolio demonstrating narrative depth and photography skills.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate evening concerts or weekend events.
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary: $45-58,000 annually, with a 90-day review to determine eligibility for wage increase
Schedule: 40 hours per week
Paid Time Off: 5 days in year one (accrued); 10 days starting year two.
Holidays: 10 paid holidays, including New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve) with a rotating "floating holiday" system to ensure newsroom coverage.
Retirement: IRA with employer matching.
Insurance: Health/Dental Insurance (subject to 30–90 day waiting period; details available via HR).
