WYDaily is a locally owned digital news outlet covering Williamsburg, James City County and York County. We are expanding our focus on accountability reporting, local government coverage and public safety news while continuing to highlight the people, businesses and events that make Greater Williamsburg unique. We are investing in deeper, daily journalism that residents rely on to understand how decisions affect their lives.
We’re seeking a self-motivated reporter to cover daily news across the Greater Williamsburg area. The reporter will deliver timely, accurate coverage focused on local government, public safety, schools and issues affecting residents, while also telling compelling community stories. The role requires strong news judgment, AP style proficiency, digital publishing skills and the ability to build sources throughout the community.
Responsibilities
- Pitch, report and write multiple daily stories on deadline, including breaking news, government coverage, and enterprise features
- Cover local government meetings, public safety, schools, business, and community events across Williamsburg, James City County, and York County
- Monitor breaking news and respond quickly with accurate reporting
- Read and analyze agendas, budgets, and public documents to identify newsworthy developments
- Conduct in-person and phone interviews with officials, residents, and community stakeholders
- Develop and maintain a strong, diverse source network within the coverage area
- Produce enterprise and feature stories in addition to daily news coverage
- Capture photos and/or video as needed
- Publish and package content in the CMS
- Collaborate with editors on story development and framing
- Attend meetings and community events as assigned
- Work independently to meet deadlines while maintaining regular communication with editors on planning and performance
- Uphold journalistic ethics, accuracy and fairness in all reporting
Requirements:
An associate’s degree in Journalism or comparable experience
Strong collaborative and communication skills
Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
A commitment to digital and multimedia storytelling
Proactive in developing story ideas and managing multiple assignments
Meets editor-set goals and deadlines
Meet measurable goals as set forth by editor
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and within flexible hours that may include nights, holidays and weekends
Job Type: Full-time
