Owensboro Times
Owensboro Times is seeking an Assistant Editor/Lead Reporter to help lead daily news coverage across our region. This position serves as one of the newsroom's primary journalists, covering major stories, developing enterprise reporting, helping guide coverage decisions, and representing Owensboro Times across digital, social, and video platforms.
The Assistant Editor plays a key role in producing timely, accurate, and impactful local journalism while helping shape daily coverage priorities and special projects.
Primary Responsibilities
Reporting & Content Creation
Write and publish approximately 15-20 stories per week.
Cover breaking news, public safety incidents, local government, education, business, and community issues.
Attend and report on government meetings, school board meetings, court proceedings, press conferences, and community events.
Develop original story ideas and enterprise reporting projects.
Conduct research, interviews, and analysis for in-depth and investigative-style coverage.
Assist with special editorial projects, series, and long-form features.
Digital Publishing & Audience Engagement
Publish stories to the Owensboro Times website using the content management system.
Help manage Owensboro Times social media platforms.
Create engaging social media content to promote stories and grow audience reach.
Monitor local developments and emerging news trends to identify coverage opportunities.
Multimedia Journalism
Appear on camera for news updates, reels, interviews, and longer-form video content.
Assist with the creation of video, social media, and other digital storytelling initiatives.
Serve as a public-facing representative of Owensboro Times across digital platforms.
Editorial Leadership
Serve as editor on a rotating basis during weekends and other assigned shifts.
Help maintain editorial standards, accuracy, and journalistic ethics.
Collaborate with newsroom leadership on daily planning and coverage priorities.
Assist with copy editing and content review as needed.
Community Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with local officials, community leaders, public information officers, business representatives, educators, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders.
Represent Owensboro Times professionally in the community.
Develop sources and maintain awareness of issues affecting the region.
Additional Duties
Assist with sports coverage as needed.
Support special projects and newsroom initiatives.
Perform other duties that contribute to the growth and success of Owensboro Times and its affiliated publications.
Qualifications
Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills.
Knowledge of AP style and journalistic ethics.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
Strong news judgment and attention to detail.
Comfortable speaking on camera and appearing in video content.
Familiarity with social media platforms and digital audience engagement.
Experience covering local government, courts, education, or breaking news preferred.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred, though equivalent experience will be considered.
