Description:

NEW MEXICO STATE ENVIRONMENT REPORTER

The Santa Fe New Mexican is seeking an ambitious journalist to cover environment issues statewide, including Los Alamos National Laboratory. This is an elite job for a journalist who wants to work for a locally owned and independent news organization with a longstanding reputation for community engagement and quality journalism.

New Mexico has an abundance of beauty and concerns. You’ll need to be an authoritative source for our statewide audience on public-policy issues involving water, land, climate, fire, drought, oil/gas, energy, data centers and federal agencies – you name it. You’ll also be part of our state politics/government team, becoming a leading source on legislative and agency decisions that could impact the New Mexico environment.

The successful candidate will cover breaking news and deliver exclusive enterprise.  Your days will be busy. If you’re someone who sees the environmental beat as 2-3 narratives a year, do not apply. This is a high-performing newsroom with a growing, curious audience.

You must be competitive, organized, deadlines-focused, and a source builder/connector with an established benchmark of trustworthiness. We’re seeking someone who thrives on data-based reporting and believes in public records requests.

Basically, we want it all.

Someone who contributes across delivery platforms -- from social media to newsletters to podcasts to web breakers to print enterprise packages -- and delivers storytelling with a high degree of news, context and impact perspectives to a statewide audience.

Someone who will own a popular weekly newsletter and help us launch a regular podcast on the New Mexico environment

Someone who strives to be THE REPORTER that other reporters are chasing.

Someone who thrives on high expectations.

In return, you’ll join a talented team that’s grown its presence statewide. The Santa Fe New Mexican is locally owned and independent with statewide influence on public-policy coverage. The New Mexican is the oldest newspaper in the state and has remained focused on accountability journalism since its inception in 1849.

Santa Fe is a small city with a big identity. New Mexico’s state capital is a world-class destination for those who appreciate the arts, culture, history, food and the outdoors. Our subscribers are smart, passionate and care about public-policy issues on the local, state, national and global level.
