Overview:
The Durango Herald, an award-winning newspaper in spectacular Southwest Colorado, is hiring a reporter to cover breaking news and city government.
Experienced and enterprising reporters are preferred. We want a reporter who is digitally minded, ambitious and hardworking to cover breaking news, the judicial system and city of Durango government.
Reporters at The Durango Herald are focused on readership and growing online audiences. We publish three printed editions per week in Durango and a weekly in Cortez. A full-time photographer and videographer is on staff, but reporters frequently are required to provide photos for their stories.
Durango is one of the most sought-after outdoor destinations in the country, offering an unrivaled four-season climate where the mountains meet the desert. It offers uncrowded access to a national forest, regional ski areas, two major rivers, a four-year college and open space galore.

The Durango Herald is part of the family-owned Ballantine Communications Inc. BCI owns and operates businesses including The Durango Herald, The Journal newspaper in Cortez, The Tri-City Record in northwest New Mexico, a phone directory and an advertising agency.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct interviews with sources to gather information for news stories
- Research and investigate news leads and story ideas
- Write and edit news articles for publication
- Capture compelling photographs and videos to accompany news stories
- Utilize social media platforms to promote news content and engage with audience
- Collaborate with editors and other reporters to ensure accurate and timely reporting
- Attend press conferences, events, and other relevant activities to report on current affairs
- Stay up-to-date with local, national, and international news trends
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong writing skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, and engaging content
- Proficient in copywriting, copy editing, proofreading, and AP style guidelines
- Experience in photography, video production, and editing
- Familiarity with social media management for news organizations
- Excellent verbal communication skills to effectively interview sources and communicate with colleagues
