Position Overview

The Director of Development is a high-impact, revenue-driving role responsible for supporting and growing The Nevada Independent’s overall fundraising and development efforts across multiple revenue streams. This is a dynamic, relationship-driven position for a versatile fundraiser who enjoys wearing multiple hats and helping build sustainable philanthropic support for one of Nevada’s most trusted and influential nonprofit news organizations.

This role will lead and support a broad range of development activities, including individual giving, major gifts, fundraising campaigns, corporate philanthropy and sponsorships, grants and foundation support and event-related fundraising.

The Director of Development will help identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and partners while working closely with the CRO to execute fundraising strategy and strengthen long-term donor engagement. While the CEO and CRO will partner on select relationships and solicitations, this role will drive day-to-day fundraising execution, donor communications and relationship management across multiple giving channels.

This is an opportunity for a collaborative and entrepreneurial development professional to help shape and grow fundraising operations at a pivotal moment for The Nevada Independent, leveraging The Indy’s strong brand, statewide reach and high-profile events platform.


Key Responsibilities

Individual Giving & Major Gifts:

  • Build, manage and grow a portfolio of individual donors and major gift prospects
  • Identify and qualify new donor prospects, including from The Indy’s membership and audience base
  • Develop and execute individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies
  • Conduct donor outreach, meetings and solicitations in partnership with the CEO and CRO as appropriate
  • Support donor retention and upgrade strategies from membership to major giving
  • Establish and maintain moves management systems to track donor engagement and pipeline activity Fundraising Campaigns & Revenue Growth Support and execute annual fundraising campaigns and membership initiatives
  • Partner with leadership on annual and multi-year fundraising strategy and revenue planning
  • Assist in developing donor communications, appeals and campaign messaging
  • Track fundraising performance metrics and donor engagement goals


Corporate Giving & Sponsorships

  • Support cultivation and stewardship of corporate sponsors and philanthropic partners
  • Assist with sponsorship outreach and fundraising tied to IndyTalks, IndyFest and other events
  • Help manage sponsor communications, benefits fulfillment and ongoing relationships Grants & Institutional Giving
  • Research and identify foundation funding opportunities
  • Assist with drafting and submitting grant proposals, reports and supporting materials
  • Help maintain relationships with institutional funders and track reporting deadlines


Donor Stewardship & Communications

  • Design and execute thoughtful donor stewardship and recognition efforts
  • Create donor-facing materials, proposals and fundraising communications
  • Ensure timely and meaningful donor follow-up and reporting


Development Operations

  • Maintain accurate donor and fundraising data in Salesforce or similar CRM
  • Track donor pipeline activity, campaign progress and revenue metrics
  • Prepare reports and updates for leadership and board members


Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner closely with the CEO, CRO and leadership team on fundraising initiatives
  • Support board engagement in fundraising and donor cultivation efforts
  • Collaborate effectively across departments, contributing where needed to support organizational priorities and advance shared goals


What Success Looks Like (First 12–18 Months)

  • Build and actively manage a healthy donor and prospect pipeline
  • Increase revenue from individual donors, major gifts and fundraising campaigns
  • Strengthen donor retention and upgrade pathways
  • Support successful fundraising tied to IndyTalks, IndyFest and sponsorship initiatives
  • Contribute to foundation funding efforts through strong grant support and reporting
  • Establish organized development systems and consistent donor engagement practices


Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of nonprofit fundraising or development experience
  • Experience with individual giving, major gifts, donor stewardship and fundraising campaigns
  • Strong communication, relationship-building and storytelling skills
  • Ability to manage multiple fundraising priorities simultaneously
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM systems
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and familiarity with tools such as Mailchimp, WordPress, Monday.com and Canva
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred

  • Experience with grants or corporate sponsorship fundraising
  • Experience in journalism, media or mission-aligned nonprofit organizations
  • Familiarity with Nevada philanthropic, political or civic landscape
  • Grant writing and reporting experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $90,000 – $115,000 DOE
